But lately I am working on a quilt that is so appropriate for this blog, I had to post a few process pictures and talk about the process and its progress.</p><p>First version of this quilt I made was in 2009 or something like that. My husband's niece had a baby and so I decided to give that one to her. Ever since then, I had thought of making another one but never got around starting one until about two or three weeks ago when I was working on a sample block for a workshop I was going to teach at a guild in Seattle. </p><p>I wrote the pattern a while back and that prompted me to make another version for myself. </p><p>I chose the colors I hadn't worked with in a while. It has been ages since I have bought new fabrics. I am sticking to my use what you have rule. It kind of feels good to use the stash. </p><p>So here is how it went. I just got a stack of brown and orange fabrics out. Selected a few based on their textures and value. <br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNes3noDzy2OizT7bhsEyfQjdslkIKrgqAbAAAIcwd1C6E4ebeSKqB-Oe3kK5bnLXWgYnF54uAUEg7uvUzLbypLoyNU31x4Rf7Le32Uf71VLuqQC9JRKlExRR6UDjWyiUJuo3egYF8IbA/s5312/20210710_174919.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2988" data-original-width="5312" height="225" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNes3noDzy2OizT7bhsEyfQjdslkIKrgqAbAAAIcwd1C6E4ebeSKqB-Oe3kK5bnLXWgYnF54uAUEg7uvUzLbypLoyNU31x4Rf7Le32Uf71VLuqQC9JRKlExRR6UDjWyiUJuo3egYF8IbA/w400-h225/20210710_174919.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><p>I already was unhappy where I was headed with these colors but that day I made a few crazy blocks. </p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjC0sviRxkwiRdDS0UfxQmjh2Tynf7dD8V6l_FSCeB5z1_uiQlJKHd5K6n_WFrNBB0-16ZVVGr8DEFStO2nX3KZLnJH92ZOJam6TPX2piVbDWQmjNsitF_GrzX6M_rWXs6G49BFm-Pig_4/s5312/20210711_121517.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="5312" data-original-width="2988" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjC0sviRxkwiRdDS0UfxQmjh2Tynf7dD8V6l_FSCeB5z1_uiQlJKHd5K6n_WFrNBB0-16ZVVGr8DEFStO2nX3KZLnJH92ZOJam6TPX2piVbDWQmjNsitF_GrzX6M_rWXs6G49BFm-Pig_4/w225-h400/20210711_121517.jpg" width="225" /></a></div><p></p><p>That night I went to bed thinking I will start over the next day. I absolutely disliked the colors. The design wall looked too much like Halloween. The next day, I woke up, went back to the sewing room and decided to make at least one basket to go on the background. This was pretty challenging because I was already frustrated with the background, how was I going to over come that? </p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBrxgelkg5z9wMwh9eWgxzrMpuW_N9z1amUpkYPJY9mIUp5nlQkwCRqRydIcHqTUXDsdDtk_T5PZiHa5yQcOsL9aTOy37vCe4TCmxoGtfuwIAnxlywfVcIJ1U9IkMoX8bD2lQ1BEKE-KM/s2188/20210711_153456%257E2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2188" data-original-width="2188" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBrxgelkg5z9wMwh9eWgxzrMpuW_N9z1amUpkYPJY9mIUp5nlQkwCRqRydIcHqTUXDsdDtk_T5PZiHa5yQcOsL9aTOy37vCe4TCmxoGtfuwIAnxlywfVcIJ1U9IkMoX8bD2lQ1BEKE-KM/w400-h400/20210711_153456%257E2.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /> I thought lighter value of basket fabrics will be perfect. Considering the seasonal aspect was already decided as soon as I chose the background, I didn't have much choice but to stick with fall colors. <p></p><p>Okay, this could work, I thought. </p><p></p><p></p><p>The original quilt had all plaids and stripes for the background. They sort of blend into each other and made a crazy but soft background. This one right here, started looking like a mosaic. I was struggling with really crazy, busy background. Still, I continued on. Once I started appliqueing the handle on the basket, I suddenly calmed down. I could hear my voice saying, this might just work. </p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilZgwtRhgZDbDF9n3wnVNzWeuk2xFgLFBiKdp2_7eLz_KezNyTYwCmJg3Bs5rt5RCOrwuKURNoDRWy4wf7SoMpCoeFaDk6busOpFbummeVr1wqxMdMsBDnaDuXC3sppTX5J9WAXfycNno/s5312/20210715_064637%257E2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="5312" data-original-width="2988" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilZgwtRhgZDbDF9n3wnVNzWeuk2xFgLFBiKdp2_7eLz_KezNyTYwCmJg3Bs5rt5RCOrwuKURNoDRWy4wf7SoMpCoeFaDk6busOpFbummeVr1wqxMdMsBDnaDuXC3sppTX5J9WAXfycNno/w225-h400/20210715_064637%257E2.jpg" width="225" /></a></div>Then there were two!<br /><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUinsbLTzPPdM9BUhG_z4amJCG7yDUXruPGqEsMS0c1rXb3fp6_VqDcBCcmfVD6RtcC8ceMmK0WV5LJY_IV-cYu-ralFk6Hbs0T8rY-CKfZL0Niz6XWCHagbggKGUjd0IH1xud__wIMzI/s5241/20210716_070646%257E3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2429" data-original-width="5241" height="185" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUinsbLTzPPdM9BUhG_z4amJCG7yDUXruPGqEsMS0c1rXb3fp6_VqDcBCcmfVD6RtcC8ceMmK0WV5LJY_IV-cYu-ralFk6Hbs0T8rY-CKfZL0Niz6XWCHagbggKGUjd0IH1xud__wIMzI/w400-h185/20210716_070646%257E3.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><p></p><p>All I had to do was to continue. I know what I will be doing this weekend. I hope to work as best as I can to complete this quilt top. It is very likely, I will finish it with machine quilting. I will be sure to come back and post the final results. </p><p>Have a great weekend you all!</p><p>Sujata<br /></p>Sujata Shahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08342637667662268215noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1538883904017420708.post-35012685492174563982021-07-13T13:32:00.003-07:002021-07-13T13:32:58.023-07:00Leftovers and Scraps for 2 New Improv Quilts<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAFRkPXqtKtbgn0QBWGlHDiRQcN886_QIwgJxRKc0LZXmbcqHFDJv9vNsqhpNrEIDKvPRgxMNEGzNtzz5OC2FLzpg0sWkfPvaZ4z21N2eDzihfRJyCMPb4WJPNHhHtJjOXSF-sroLanaSc/s2048/07D05EBD-08D3-4DA8-B9A8-67006C8368A6.jpeg" style="display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding: 1em 0px; text-align: center;"><img alt="" border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAFRkPXqtKtbgn0QBWGlHDiRQcN886_QIwgJxRKc0LZXmbcqHFDJv9vNsqhpNrEIDKvPRgxMNEGzNtzz5OC2FLzpg0sWkfPvaZ4z21N2eDzihfRJyCMPb4WJPNHhHtJjOXSF-sroLanaSc/s400/07D05EBD-08D3-4DA8-B9A8-67006C8368A6.jpeg" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Improv 'Half Square Triangles and Broken Dishes'</td></tr></tbody></table><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjAjOM5820YhjQwH4M0vlnR1xBZsZbjmqz0iaDm7KD-w99slhZ6kOUUE5DhPDKOtPR2YE_x7zBXJk7SdKw3toJvrj517cd7Cvp2gnrDXFQuOM7loZKscZthtxmJjhGjX9nV1FHupeel8nB/s2048/8E0E5B65-F2E5-4FDB-8BA6-70B3BAD2E319.jpeg" style="display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding: 1em 0px; text-align: center;"><img alt="" border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjAjOM5820YhjQwH4M0vlnR1xBZsZbjmqz0iaDm7KD-w99slhZ6kOUUE5DhPDKOtPR2YE_x7zBXJk7SdKw3toJvrj517cd7Cvp2gnrDXFQuOM7loZKscZthtxmJjhGjX9nV1FHupeel8nB/s400/8E0E5B65-F2E5-4FDB-8BA6-70B3BAD2E319.jpeg" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">'Orange X Squares Medallion Quilt', my design.</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">Thanks Sujata for hosting this blog, Basket of Scraps.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">These two quilts are my improv designs. It measures 69" x 76".<br />
<br />

<br />
Beginning with a desire to use up my red and green scraps, I started with a rough idea of strip piecing my red scraps in a large rectangular ring around a central block and then adding my green scraps in a way to be determined. I began piecing this quilt early in December 2019 but then holidays, a December graduation, and family visits took priority and my red strips languished on the wall.<br />
<br />

Enter January 2020! Champing at the bit, I got back to it. Okay, too late for Christmas 2019 but early for Christmas 2020, right? <br /><br />After some red strips were put into place I began looking at the Greens. I found a wonky tree idea by Karla Alexander called "Crazy Christmas Trees" that I liked and made a large freezer paper pattern. I pieced one to see if it would fit the bill. It was rather a painstaking process and I decided the fabrics I used were not enticing.....at that point I was just too impatient to move on rather than try another tree version although I am keeping that tree pattern in mind because I love the wonkiness.....it may show up in another quilt someday.<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: left;">
So, what next? The scrappy quilt was looking folksy and homey so I defaulted to old-fashioned, simple, free-wheeling log cabins (one was already in the center) and started piecing them randomly. From a distance they kind of reminded me of Christmas wreaths with red berries! They formed the third ring and then it was time for a final border.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
A couple red fabrics from clothes I've sewn for myself many years ago are in this top! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
When I showed my 'quilt in progress' to my sisters (who are not quilt makers), one of them said “just the reds would be nice” and another commented that the Greens “seem not to have been invited to the party”. What? It’s a Christmas quilt....so red and green naturally, no? I was committed to my original vision but gave the second opinion a bit of thought and altered the central red rings a bit to extend an 'invite' to the Greens.....can you tell what I did? Not sure if it makes any difference!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I machine-quilted it on my domestic Viking with straight lines....lots of fun because I got to travel across all those lovely colors again and twice enjoy them! I had that wonderful red backing already in my stash. (It's also in the quilt front.) My daughter helped me choose the correct shade of green for the binding....and that was the only fabric that I had to purchase at the quilt shop because I didn't have a big enough piece of just the right color. And now it's signed and ready for Christmas 2020 festivities!</div>

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMX0D9v7L_NAxigEZjCB-4f1LGkoJjDSV1jVIYAi4uMtBHElus82UkfFG5ecjRh4gw037o83Ry5vFTivxs2fhhSwjza6fpXuIhPR18_v0rv2RLSZGsAsPXO7YbGkGjEI5MACraokn8F5xd/s1600/IMG_7882_1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1240" data-original-width="1600" height="494" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMX0D9v7L_NAxigEZjCB-4f1LGkoJjDSV1jVIYAi4uMtBHElus82UkfFG5ecjRh4gw037o83Ry5vFTivxs2fhhSwjza6fpXuIhPR18_v0rv2RLSZGsAsPXO7YbGkGjEI5MACraokn8F5xd/s640/IMG_7882_1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Instead of continuing with hourglass blocks at the intersections of the octagons as I did for the first few blocks, I took the fabric of the "sashing" further to form the point. The hour glass blocks gave very bulky seams at the corners of the red pieces but now there is less bulk but more Y-seams!<br />
<br />
The original quilt was pieced by hand and I think that if I had done that I may have been finished sooner. Slow going as it was I'm glad I persevered; I'm quite comfortable with Y-seams now!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmbZ5QYdf_0CRdAex8rgeWs_wLlkqT8SAI-JQBddixiKSlnHAT5-M0sET3XV1Q0xNrCV77aZlSAtFYimrvrdsUnCLLCZnVw2nrsZIyPTnpZwnJsIP5w1bjtpkA8m1UA6DHhp9mZL2ntv-g/s1600/IMG_7883_1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmbZ5QYdf_0CRdAex8rgeWs_wLlkqT8SAI-JQBddixiKSlnHAT5-M0sET3XV1Q0xNrCV77aZlSAtFYimrvrdsUnCLLCZnVw2nrsZIyPTnpZwnJsIP5w1bjtpkA8m1UA6DHhp9mZL2ntv-g/s640/IMG_7883_1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I quilted the red squares with various FMQ designs, and varying degrees of success! In the "sashing" I followed the seam lines to avoid losing the shape of the octagons. In my view that has worked well and they stand out nicely. <br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
fabrics: scraps from stash <br />
measurements: 38" x 44"<br />
pieced with Aurifil 50 wt light grey<br />
quilted with Aurifil 40 wt dark blue, dark red and bright red.</blockquote>
Now I'm going to look into the book again and see which quilt I would like to make next! <br />
<br />
Happy sewing<br />
<br />
Marly.<br />

I love the new improv quilts but I also like using well-loved traditional quilt patterns and making my own version of those familiar blocks that have been around forever. It feels fitting and proper to add to the quilt story with one's own humble version of the tried and true....a joining up with the sisterhood!<br />

<br />
I chose smaller calico-like prints from my stash and dug deeper into my older fabrics. It's always such a pleasure to place an 'older' fabric in a quilt and give it a reason for being! I took my cues from the inspiration quilt (below) but didn't use any stripes or plaids like this quilt maker did. I also did not add that unexpected strip of bright red on one side. My blocks seemed to call for a softer green border. My quilt is approximately 51 1/2" x 51 1/2". The inspiration quilt is 65" x 68" and notice how there is binding on three sides but not on the fourth! There is definitely a story with that added strip of red but we'll never know! Ah...the mysteries....<br />

At last, back to my blocks for the quilt inspired by</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
"Cross"/Four Patch!!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It's been so long since I made any progress so here is a photo</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
of the quilt </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br style="caret-color: rgb(34, 34, 34); color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, Utopia, "Palatino Linotype", Palatino, serif; font-size: 16px; text-size-adjust: auto;" /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfXGIgI-CboVT46687rq6JbND1bEpNDSKy0xcf1sCea10mzcd3etSPfD2WYxoQLp91DpTKksZz1LlWskSf4IUIfl9PKvGTtD40nKtLII30B0TAhlg6fqrH2XKhwI9Lxut9VmYozw8aFS0N/s1600/IMG_3191.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="color: #888888; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13.2px; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-decoration-line: none; text-size-adjust: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1351" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfXGIgI-CboVT46687rq6JbND1bEpNDSKy0xcf1sCea10mzcd3etSPfD2WYxoQLp91DpTKksZz1LlWskSf4IUIfl9PKvGTtD40nKtLII30B0TAhlg6fqrH2XKhwI9Lxut9VmYozw8aFS0N/s320/IMG_3191.jpg" style="-webkit-box-shadow: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.0980392) 1px 1px 5px; background-color: white; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; border-bottom-left-radius: 5px; border-bottom-right-radius: 5px; border-top-left-radius: 5px; border-top-right-radius: 5px; border: 1px solid rgb(238, 238, 238); box-shadow: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.0980392) 1px 1px 5px; padding: 5px; position: relative;" width="284" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Now, most folk know I love bright and bold, the more colour</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
the better for me.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So, I had made a few blocks way back in January which then languished</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
in the studio. It was time to get busy and make some progress.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Made in the past two days the ones below are bolder than the group</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
mentioned above, and I had a ball making them!!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I'm going to continue on using KF Collective, AMH anda few fabrics from </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
other designers presently giving us the sort of fabrics I love.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
Those of you who follow my blog will be seeing these</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
for the second time I'm afraid!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Now I'm not going for the size of the quilt in the photo,</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
11" finished and a decision on whether to border, as the original,</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
or not, will come when all blocks are up on the wall.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Meanwhile I'm looking through the book trying to pick out</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
which quilt would be next in line!</div>

</div>
I'm not sure how many quilts I've made with Sujata's free-pieced blocks, but I'm always encouraged by the outcome. There's just something about the method that resonates so well with me, helps me to <i>not</i> get bogged down in decision fatigue I can often experience with other styles of improv.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Vintage Lily</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Vintage Lily above, is the most recently completed quilt made with help from the 'Cultural Fusion' book. Love the old timey vibe from imperfect piecing and a scrappy fabric pull. This one even managed to incorporate some reclaimed, well loved shirting fabrics! You can <a href="https://quiltyfolk.blogspot.com/2019/07/vintage-lily-is-lovely-finish.html">read</a> more about it on my blog if you like or maybe take a look while its hanging in the <a href="https://www.ncwquilt.org/quilt-show-2016">NCW Quilt and Art Festival</a> later in August. {If you happen to be in the area, that is.}<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Chunky Crossroads</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Chunky Crossroads, above, is an <a href="https://quiltyfolk.blogspot.com/2018/02/moving-another-quilt-to-finish-line.html">earlier attempt</a> at yet another free-pieced block in the book. I meant for the blocks to look even 'chunkier', but we all have our natural rhythms when cutting! When thinking to post the Vintage Lily quilt, I remembered that this one never got posted over here on Sujata's blog. These blocks turned out to be such a wonderful <i>base</i> for the applique border that I was itching to do. So many times, I'm really just looking for a great, but unobtrusive compliment for whatever applique that is on my mind. Thinking about complex piecing can just make my head hurt! This quilt was given to one of my sister-in-laws shortly after finishing and I'm pretty sure she loves me just a little more now....<br /><br />Audrey--Quilty Folkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15283525206911076367noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1538883904017420708.post-63647485162702322052019-07-20T17:35:00.001-07:002019-09-25T10:51:06.050-07:00Optic Strings - an update<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

This is the last photo of my Overlapping Octagons before the final Y-seams to bring it all together.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLfWsygsUgy9EHGmnIu4xCb1KvDpSM723032EQW6w0y1wlfAqaXLlE0siw4Ooan_FVOdyIjt4sxujB98ah_1uoPZARG622TzPISQlKKaI-3-eT6m9MnEOjJX3Ptf-onoAAu1cBUd4GVPR2/s1600/IMG_7804_1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLfWsygsUgy9EHGmnIu4xCb1KvDpSM723032EQW6w0y1wlfAqaXLlE0siw4Ooan_FVOdyIjt4sxujB98ah_1uoPZARG622TzPISQlKKaI-3-eT6m9MnEOjJX3Ptf-onoAAu1cBUd4GVPR2/s640/IMG_7804_1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
This has certainly been a challenge. The challenge is not yet over! Because a photo is flat it's difficult to show how the triangle sections between four red squares are refusing to lie flat.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyslJrsRsZI2MWVqBGLTkb4ALstpfkxRYrA-ZTsyCRnk17laCUPXh7uSDYZcCE7stJpOl_lSCJXGSHX4ju8X2VmUz9zszT5UNpCnv40WmX_cchSrDLnMC3Mxz3UVJDsOfvbr2ytMjQQE-K/s1600/IMG_7805_1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyslJrsRsZI2MWVqBGLTkb4ALstpfkxRYrA-ZTsyCRnk17laCUPXh7uSDYZcCE7stJpOl_lSCJXGSHX4ju8X2VmUz9zszT5UNpCnv40WmX_cchSrDLnMC3Mxz3UVJDsOfvbr2ytMjQQE-K/s400/IMG_7805_1.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">bubbly triangles!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I have re-sewn some of the seams in the bubbly triangles; the rest I'll try to tame by hand when I finish joining all the columns. I think I probably have more control over the fabric when hand sewing.<br />
<br />
Much as I like the effect of the vertical white fissures in the first photo, they are not a design feature; my next task is to join columns 1 and 2, and then to join that section to columns 3 and 4. Lastly I'll be joining the seams between columns 4 and 5. Somewhere along the line I see I need to add a couple of small triangles in the edges, and to add triangles to three of the four corners. I haven't yet decided whether or not this quilt is calling for a border. What do you think?<br />
<br />
Happy sewing<br />

They come in all sizes in their quilts and it seems to be a common ‘go to’ block for them. <br />
<br />
This past April I began piecing simple 19-inch housetop blocks. They didn’t really turn out to look like Gee’s Bend blocks because I used mostly prints - which is predominantly what I have in my stash......although lately I have been trying to add more solids to my quilts because I’ve noticed so many of the quilts which I like have solids in them! I call it “Spring Housetop”.<br />
<br />

<br />
In this quilt is fabric from some of my other quilts, fabric from a dress I sewed for myself years ago, dresses I sewed for my two daughters <i>many</i> years ago, and simply stash. There is also a thrift shop cotton shower curtain fabric in there!<br />

<br />
In process on the wall....actually the center fabric in two of these blocks got weeded out in the final edit....the black in the upper right corner read too dark....and I can't remember why the utensils didn't make the cut!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjeIiIJRKNcDg2xtNbJVUX9ijFTr0DXkVJsf_FtN6hryXTzsuldmpJN_3AmRh9dmYlT7OnR4Cjdeb8gj6dqELKd9NyW97HhhURhOAByNf-ojWoRKNhV3EGiBQApqoXZMKiS4cbtDm8fM8w/s1600/In+Process+%25282%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1590" data-original-width="1600" height="396" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjeIiIJRKNcDg2xtNbJVUX9ijFTr0DXkVJsf_FtN6hryXTzsuldmpJN_3AmRh9dmYlT7OnR4Cjdeb8gj6dqELKd9NyW97HhhURhOAByNf-ojWoRKNhV3EGiBQApqoXZMKiS4cbtDm8fM8w/s400/In+Process+%25282%2529.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The fabric in one block was too thin so I backed it with another fabric to give it bulk....<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgww6L5A3IcjjdW3ZByfvxF3FbZL0iVDF3CCAzLc1SatW1i-eglsBa_T79IQSi6FWvbHm76w4bAwvtAE00aAJoEcxzhwUOdOYwcI24Zya5PHCayzWfLuZal_0wkyuHxVEvlyzq-pDv8V-s/s1600/Backing+a+thinner+fabric.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgww6L5A3IcjjdW3ZByfvxF3FbZL0iVDF3CCAzLc1SatW1i-eglsBa_T79IQSi6FWvbHm76w4bAwvtAE00aAJoEcxzhwUOdOYwcI24Zya5PHCayzWfLuZal_0wkyuHxVEvlyzq-pDv8V-s/s400/Backing+a+thinner+fabric.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Here are some of the blocks before being quilted.....the lily fabric is left over from an apron I made my mother years ago.....the two tone purple print is from binding on another quilt. I really like it when the same fabric shows up in several of my quilts.....it makes the quilts seem like sisters...like they're related and connected by a common thread. Ha! One big happy quilt family!<br />

The daisies on the navy background (<i>below</i>) is fabric that I used with a smaller size daisy print in the same colors to make dresses for my two daughters years ago.....so that reminds me of them! And the turquoise with purple circles is from shorts that my son wore when little. Okay, enough with walking down memory lane!<br />

I like that it sewed up very fast with such big pieces and I sent it to My Long Arm Quilting Service in New York for a Baptist fan quilting treatment. Just got it back recently, sewed the binding on, and called it finished! (Still have to do a label.)<br />

The top quilt was random scraps for a class I was teaching on Improv Log Cabins. I’ve titled it “Still Crazy (About Quilting) After All These Years. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The bottom quilt is titled “Sunshine Scraps for Sujata” which started out following the quilt Sujata demonstrated for this challenge. Of course, I veered off course. I used solids that must have been the original charm pack way back before stores had die cutters and a standard size. They were approximately 4” sort of square. Close enough for this project. The prints were from a mystery box I purchased one from a local quilt store years ago with random leftover block of the month kits. There was a great variety of fabrics in all sizes, all neat and tidy. I eliminated the corner quarter triangle squares. I used simple straight line machine quilting. Fun and Done!</div>

Some of the quilts in here have been on my bucket list for a long time! I love it when suddenly it becomes clear to me what I NEED to sew next....that point when nothing else crowds in front waving its colorful promise and begging to be first, you know?<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Lattice Quilt - 64" x 76" </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjW1tebKxOBwxU9L7ybt2LGrlEYX7kC4u1vqVxXJcFqwvO1tyQvvDCd_cHmb9KQFxEPSgNuHUQilDJpHZxb3EJa70jIDmk6ZDmuyBl5zHkC0EEvobqL_A0kCayJHZBBTGFbnDdq9EMSy_U/s1600/Lattice+quilt+finished.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjW1tebKxOBwxU9L7ybt2LGrlEYX7kC4u1vqVxXJcFqwvO1tyQvvDCd_cHmb9KQFxEPSgNuHUQilDJpHZxb3EJa70jIDmk6ZDmuyBl5zHkC0EEvobqL_A0kCayJHZBBTGFbnDdq9EMSy_U/s640/Lattice+quilt+finished.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The Lattice quilt took its place at the front of the line.....it had long been on my “to do” list and its time had come. I began making blocks.....LOVING the freehand cut curves for the lattice. As usual I made a ton of blocks.....when piecing blocks for a “block” quilt, I find that I ALWAYS make many more than I need. I can’t really tell how everything is going to play together until I actually see it up on the wall and I like plenty of choices without having to return to the sewing machine every five minutes! Even so, it's a continuous process of "yes, no" and "make some more". Often what I think will be perfect as I collect a pile of fabrics....just isn’t. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-R8G8NmtWjh-rPfYUjlDJPwF5BNZvmbVBXZUX5PODPBw3kKIrSt2jknWCCuq2aXsALF3Bv6rSlejNVOUe_taadPkA3MQYoX-H0TCmxmukinKU0cUepwVsgYxDowk2xSA9sd_bkubFskY/s1600/Lattice+perspective.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-R8G8NmtWjh-rPfYUjlDJPwF5BNZvmbVBXZUX5PODPBw3kKIrSt2jknWCCuq2aXsALF3Bv6rSlejNVOUe_taadPkA3MQYoX-H0TCmxmukinKU0cUepwVsgYxDowk2xSA9sd_bkubFskY/s640/Lattice+perspective.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
For example, the yellow/green (below) seemed to be too stark....and it needed to exit the premises. I liked the darker leafy green but only had a limited amount so I had to piece a few 9 inch blocks before cutting the lattice strip from the middle....but no problem there. I began with different reds and had to jettison them, but rather late in the game the orange/red fabric showed up and I felt it to be perfect. Yay for a touch of Orange!<br />

Happily I found that I could cut 7.5 inch squares instead of 6.5 inch squares (per instructions) from the pieced units (which began with a 9 inch square) so I was able to make a slightly bigger quilt from my efforts with less fabric loss. Win Win. Sewing the curves was FUN!<br />
<br />
I also ironed my seams open when joining the blocks.....it seemed to help with more accuracy at the join.<br />

This quilt was machine quilted by me in an irregular cross-hatch. A great deal of the fun of machine quilting my own quilts is traveling across all the fabrics and enjoying them all over again while they are playing nicely with each other in a unified whole! I’m sure the same is true for hand quilting. We’re doubling our pleasure, right?!<br />

I adore riffing off of quilts in the Unconventional and Unexpected book by Roderick Kiracofe. Trying to keep with the same look/feel/vibe of these quilts while using more modern day fabrics never gets old.<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

It was quite the challenge in many ways and I wrote quite a bit about the journey over at <a href="https://quiltyfolk.blogspot.com/2019/05/its-good-to-have-occasional-challenge.html">my personal blog</a>. I also combined this challenge with another one over at <a href="https://adhocimprovquilts.blogspot.com/">AHIQ blog</a>, the #AHIQRED challenge where Red is considered a Neutral.<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

There are several more quilts in the book that I have bookmarked for future interpretation attempts. So much joy in these charmingly make-do look quilts. It often makes me think that we could take our quilt-making attempts a little too seriously at times! Thanks <a href="https://therootconnection.blogspot.com/">Sujata</a> for the great QAL! You gave me the perfect excuse to try making yet another quilt in the book!<br />Audrey--Quilty Folkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15283525206911076367noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1538883904017420708.post-15019826300219686992019-05-15T06:14:00.000-07:002019-07-13T10:28:32.143-07:00Overlapping Octagons and Y-seamsFor the UandUQAL organised by Sujata Shah I am reproducing the
Overlapping Octagons quilt from Roderick Kirakofe's book,
"Unconventional and Unexpected". I haven't done much to it over the last
few months; this is the present state of this lap quilt.<br />
<br />
I
have made octagons with red centres surrounded by predominantly dark
blue strings. With this choice I aimed to use up most of my blue and
red Civil War reproduction fabrics, and with the red I succeeded and
have added more modern reds, but the blue were all so dark I soon
started introducing flashes of other colours.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimX_YqDxTzj0aywb8BG_IV0B9ctF5_mH0NVRtg-RohgqwiKzK_BhD_mm9NFrQw-7CTI00Kp_Ifb8DRfm4k6zBOPyz2zd5VdIAFsKHQKAlRcQp7aWqk3QlCs8F0Zw6eu3TpESSn-ZpUmSc/s1600/IMG_7642_1.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1358" data-original-width="1600" height="542" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimX_YqDxTzj0aywb8BG_IV0B9ctF5_mH0NVRtg-RohgqwiKzK_BhD_mm9NFrQw-7CTI00Kp_Ifb8DRfm4k6zBOPyz2zd5VdIAFsKHQKAlRcQp7aWqk3QlCs8F0Zw6eu3TpESSn-ZpUmSc/s640/IMG_7642_1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
At
present they're not overlapping, but I have more red squares cut, and
here I've positioned them where red squares will go in the final design.
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEZ9hHvYNrcBx9gr7K8p9XwSNGbvdOcRrkGpzTeXMYqafLVttOv64PNO0burqUzZfhMRoMyG07RGiWlsUX1LcOJXI3CQzwVCxlnZnoVZVTgL4dg-Ex5FLkTIMTzvOJgNa-TwjkBhwAWAE/s1600/IMG_7643_1.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1424" data-original-width="1600" height="568" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEZ9hHvYNrcBx9gr7K8p9XwSNGbvdOcRrkGpzTeXMYqafLVttOv64PNO0burqUzZfhMRoMyG07RGiWlsUX1LcOJXI3CQzwVCxlnZnoVZVTgL4dg-Ex5FLkTIMTzvOJgNa-TwjkBhwAWAE/s640/IMG_7643_1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
I am pleased that the overlapping octagons have now emerged.<br />
<br />
The
octagon blocks have Y-seams at each corner, and inserting the second
set of red centre blocks will involve more Y-seams. I wasn't happy about
this at the beginning, and so tried making hourglass blocks in the
corners, as shown here:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgh-7x4t-GwfwRZo2b82KUL3EsZqkaI00_36SMKNJPaGjZcXZtN9n7Cz8NLQvSf7ejz9NnqGqZEtlehLEfsJ3jXm2EqK5uKHrEcbR4SaXPMrm-xafFVbnD8hyrsfAA14lFKATiWV2YSQt8/s1600/IMG_7645_1.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="752" data-original-width="965" height="249" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgh-7x4t-GwfwRZo2b82KUL3EsZqkaI00_36SMKNJPaGjZcXZtN9n7Cz8NLQvSf7ejz9NnqGqZEtlehLEfsJ3jXm2EqK5uKHrEcbR4SaXPMrm-xafFVbnD8hyrsfAA14lFKATiWV2YSQt8/s320/IMG_7645_1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
This
is one of two hourglass blocks I retained, before I gave up on them. At
each of the corners of this hourglass block five fabrics come together
making very bulky seams which I couldn't get to lie flat.<br />
<br />
Doing
Y-seams, however, means joining only three, which will lie much more
easily, especially if the last string in the side panel continues into
the corner triangle, as here below. <br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpBv0kSjAR9nOr2tTgb8WBIoyENgtNcSRf8A2114HRVUVLD-K1jbdnzN04-UfAP_4pw4HJBKpc_ry2gcQ7FQiq3OV62tJyS8jbwHZ2RVb3CsKQQhRY6JdZRJteW54N5uQ8tdlhqhjeqHM/s1600/IMG_7645_2.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="590" data-original-width="572" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpBv0kSjAR9nOr2tTgb8WBIoyENgtNcSRf8A2114HRVUVLD-K1jbdnzN04-UfAP_4pw4HJBKpc_ry2gcQ7FQiq3OV62tJyS8jbwHZ2RVb3CsKQQhRY6JdZRJteW54N5uQ8tdlhqhjeqHM/s320/IMG_7645_2.jpg" width="310" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Sorry about the fuzziness!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
In this corner above, one of the four string sets
ends in a separate triangle; this is one of the string sets I originally
joined to an hourglass block. I rejected that method because of the
lack of continuity between the string set and its triangular ending as
well as the bulkiness of the join.<br />
<br />
There was only one
thing for it: Y-seams. I dreaded the thought! Now I'm becoming an
expert! Practice makes perfect, they say, and I've had a lot of
practice! The secret lies in:<br />
<ol>
<li>starting sewing the seam at the opposite end to the Y-join, </li>
<li>stopping two stitches before the point of the join and backtracking a
couple of stitches. That unsewn space gives you some room to manoeuvre.</li>
<li>starting each seam four stitch lengths further than the join,
stitching back two stitches to fix the seam and then stitching the seam
further until two stitch lengths before the point and backtracking two
to fix the seam.</li>
</ol>
The mistake I made when I first tried Y-seams was to start at
the point where everything came together. It's very crowded there! Much
easier to keep your distance from everyone else at the party. Approach
slowly and stand still when you're close enough. After following a
tutorial from <a href="https://maryhueyquilts.blogspot.com/">Mary Huey</a> on sewing tumbling blocks, it was plain sailing for me! Mary illustrates the process with lots of excellent, <i>clear </i>photos.<br />
<br />
Happy sewing<br />

It has been a very busy few months. With all that is going on I am considering my UandU inspired quilt as a very slow cooking project.<br />
<br />
I have managed to make enough of these foundation pieced blocks to make a large enough bed quilt but the question is when will I be able to cut the center squares and actually make the quilt top.<br />
<br />
I will work on lot of hand projects this year. Who knows? I may even come back to this to hand stitch the blocks. <br />

<br />
This "Scrappy Spring" top pieced in April 2019 has been machine-quilted and bound all in the same month.....I'm being a busy beaver trying to finish up some projects before I launch into new starts.<br />
<br />
I quilted evenly spaced straight vertical lines one inch apart. Finished size of quilt is 55 1/4" x 62 3/4". I'm telling myself to make quilts that I may want to hang on my walls a bit smaller from now on because my latest pieces take up too much room for the wall space that I have.<br />
<br />
Thank goodness I had enough of the purple/plum solid fabric for the binding.<br />
<br />
Spring feels yellow and purple and white to me because of the forsythia, daffodils, grape hyacinths, violets, and lilacs that bloom in my yard. <br />
