Conundrum - The Quilt

Conundrum is finished!

Measures 30" wide x 42" long

Created using the cut off corners 

from the blocks for Optic Strings.

Layout inspired by the "String Grid" quilt on page 22

of Roderick Kiracofe's Unconventional and Unexpected.

This is my first finish for Sujata's U and U QAL.

Backing is by Keiko Goke ("stripe plaid")

I used the one leftover triangle to create a label.

Quilted with Affinity variegated Rainbow thread

(with Glide Bark in the bobbin)

using my unmarked liberated free motion all-over fans.

And here is where Conundrum will live

for the foreseeable future -

the door to my design studio.

More blocks for Unconventional and Unexpected

At last, back to my blocks for the quilt inspired by

"Cross"/Four Patch!!

It's been so long since I made any progress so here is a photo

of the quilt 

Now, most folk know I love bright and bold, the more colour

the better for me.

So, I had made a few blocks way back in January which then languished

in the studio. It was time to get busy and make some progress.

Made in the past two days the ones below are bolder than the group

mentioned above, and I had a ball making them!!

I'm going to continue on using KF Collective, AMH anda few fabrics from 

other designers presently giving us the sort of fabrics I love.

Those of you who follow my blog will be seeing these

for the second time I'm afraid!

Now I'm not going for the size of the quilt in the photo,

I think probably five across and six down with the blocks being

11" finished and a decision on whether to border, as the original,

or not, will come when all blocks are up on the wall.

Meanwhile I'm looking through the book trying to pick out

which quilt would be next in line!

The Lattice Quilt Intrepretation

This is the quilt that I ended up with as the answer to the #UANDUQAL. I adore riffing off of quilts in the Unconventional and Unexpected book by Roderick Kiracofe. Trying to keep with the same look/feel/vibe of these quilts while using more modern day fabrics never gets old.

It was quite the challenge in many ways and I wrote quite a bit about the journey over at my personal blog.  I also combined this challenge with another one over at AHIQ blog, the #AHIQRED challenge where Red is considered a Neutral.

There are several more quilts in the book that I have bookmarked for future interpretation attempts. So much joy in these charmingly make-do look quilts. It often makes me think that we could take our quilt-making attempts a little too seriously at times! Thanks Sujata for the great QAL! You gave me the perfect excuse to try making yet another quilt in the book!

Progress on UandU Quilt

It has been a very busy few months. With all that is going on I am considering my UandU inspired quilt as a very slow cooking project.

I have managed to make enough of these foundation pieced blocks to make a large enough bed quilt but the question is when will I be able to cut the center squares and actually make the quilt top.

I will work on lot of hand projects this year. Who knows? I may even come back to this to hand stitch the blocks.

Overlapping Octagons

My "Overlapping Octagons" is progressing, but nowhere near completion. Here are the units I've made so far, randomly placed on the design wall.

Overlapping Octagons: Try-out on the design wall with 4.5" red (the new neutral) centres.

I thought I would use as many of my 19th century reproduction fabrics as possible to make space in my sewing room. Unfortunately most of the "reds" look more like brown, so I shall be adding brighter reds to the mix.There was not much blue, and that has nearly all been used now.

I started by planning to use neutral squares; changed my mind to using red ones; changed back to planning neutral and went for it. I forgot to take a photo, but 4.5" neutral squares, surrounded by dark blue strips were so boring! I decided to go back to the red plan and to add neutral and green as well as orange to the strings.The neutral squares went into the hourglass blocks, and strings; cut smaller they are much less ugly/boring..

Although I planned to cut everything freehand, that hasn't been the case. Only the hourglass blocks and some of the strings have been cut freehand, a lot of the strings are actually strips left over from other projects. I didn't dare cut the squares freehand; 4.5" is definitely still out of my comfort zone!

At present I've no idea how large I'm going to make this, and how I'm going to finish it. I'm enjoying using up scraps like this: really satisfying!

Blue scraps

As I have quite a few scraps in my blue scrap bin, my quilt will be made from them.  I love a blue and white quilt (with a few scraps of red thrown in of course)  I also like Sujata's suggestion of using the squares as background (white or off white) so that will be a possibility for my quilt.

I'm going to start out by making a couple of different sized blocks and see where that takes me, I will need to draw out a bit of a pattern so I don't get lost along the way.

Gathering the fabrics

I finally decided I was going to go with the quilt

design marked out by Sujata, it may be a slightly large block size though.

As usual I'm going with my bright and bold plus a few solids, at least

that's the present plan.

yes, I must find a place for it somewhere.

Pattern presently being drawn out and I'm hoping to make a test block

over the coming weekend.
